I like contemporary music. I respect the oldies too, but when crap mainstream music will define my generation, then there has to be someone who has to highlight some of the brilliance that might get lost.

A Seven Song Set for your Summer featuring:
Madvillian - "Papermill" Madvillain is a hip hop group consisting of MF DOOM and Madlib. Their debut album Madvillainy was met with wide critical acclaim and is currently on their sophomore effort. With its unassuming rhythms and quick wit lyrics, the quick rap in "Papermill" is the perfect appetizer for summer music. |
Bear Hands - "What a Drag" Bear Hands is a four-piece pun that has that jangly indie rock sound that could only be born in New York City. "What a Drag" is powered by hypnotizing drums, which dances around the space of guitar strums and the addictive lyrics of the chorus. |
The Like - "He's Not a Boy" The Like is actually a Los Angeles quartet of self-taught girls who have toured with the likes of Phantom Planet and Kings of Leon. Their second album is due out in June 2010. If the Spice Girls came to fame during the British Invasion of the 1950s, and had the same "Do-It-Yourself" spirit like the Beatles, it'd sound like "He's Not a Boy." |
Free Energy -"Something in Common" Free Energy is a Philadelphia band that performs melodic, hook-laden rock tunes with a heavy dose of bombastic glam and classic dust. "Something in Common" is a B-Side off their debut album and is much more mellow but not any less melodic, chill and seductive. |
K'Naan - "Wavin' Flag ft. David Bisbai" K'Naan is a Somali-born, Canadian singer/songwriter, who is inspired by the childhood injustices he saw in his native homeland and is sharing his political positions through beautiful rhythmic poetry. The original "Wavin' Flag" is an inspirational anthem for the underprivileged and the unheard. This remix for the FIFA World Cup 2010, is just as uplifting as the original and is also a beautiful example of the world coming together. This Spanish remix featuring David Bisbai, is just one of eight unique international remixes. |
Rafter - "Paper" Rafter is the performing name of musician and producer Rafter Roberts who hails from San Diego, California. His music is a beguiling mix of global influences filtered through a lens of eclectic experimentation. "Paper" is the musical equivalent of a Coke-Mentos Experiment gone right. But underneath the sound, the emphasis on paper being an essential tool for creativity has made this song a personal fave. |
Kids of 88 - "Just a Little Bit" Kids of 88 is a New Wave duo of best friends who have known each other for nearly a decade. Groovy and moody, their electropop sound makes one jump onto the dance floor. When I first heard "Just a Little Bit" I had to move. That's when I knew summer arrived. |
